Which type of pipe is usually preferred for domestic water supply?

Many consider copper piping to be the standard for residential hot or cold water applications. These lightweight, durable metal pipes are available in 2- and 10-foot rigid lengths with diameters from ½ inch to 1 inch. Copper pipes remain a common solution for water supply lines in today's homes because of their reliability and corrosion-resistant material, which presents little or no health risks. It is easy to cut and is designed for installation in residential spaces. If the path from the house to the street is short (less than 60 feet), you would use type L soft copper.

It is less likely to break and has no connections in the ground, except at each end of the pipe. I would also place foam insulation around the copper pipe. For longer runs, my next option would be a type 40 PVC pipe. Not a bad choice at all. The plumber used a 1.5-inch white PVC pipe that extended 60 to 65 feet and then joined it with another old PVC pipe (which was previously in the ground) to connect it to the water meter.
